How to Host a Minecraft Server (2026 Guide)

Hosting a Minecraft server sounds harder than it is. You do not need to be a sysadmin, and you do not need to leave a PC running all night. This guide walks through every realistic way to get a world online in 2026, what each one actually costs, and how to pick the right one for your group.

By the end you will have a server your friends can join, and a clear idea of what you are paying for.

What you need before you start

Every method below shares the same basics:

  • A version to run. Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, or a full modpack. Paper is the most common choice for a smooth vanilla-style server because it handles more players on the same hardware.
  • Enough RAM. This is the number that matters most. A small vanilla server for a handful of friends runs comfortably on 2 to 4 GB. Modded servers need far more (see the sizing section below).
  • A stable connection to the machine. Whether that is your own PC or a hosted box, players connect to an IP address and a port. Port 25565 is the Minecraft default.

That is the whole checklist. The real decision is where the server runs.

Option 1: Host it yourself on your own PC

The free option. You download the server software from minecraft.net, run it, and forward port 25565 on your router so friends outside your home can connect.

  • Your PC has to stay on the entire time anyone might want to play.

  • If the game lags, it lags for you too, because the server and your client fight over the same CPU.

Self-hosting is genuinely fine for a quick weekend with two or three friends on the same version. For anything ongoing, it stops being worth the hassle.

Option 2: Rent a monthly server from a traditional host

  • Scaling up or down usually means changing plans, not a slider.

If your group plays daily and predictably, a flat monthly plan is reasonable. If you play in bursts, you are leaving money on the table.

Option 3: Host on demand and pay only while you play

How much RAM and CPU do you actually need?

RAM is the setting people get wrong most often. Here is a realistic starting point for a Paper or vanilla server:

Getting your friends connected

Once the server is running, players need two things: the address and the right client version.

  • The address is an IP and port, or a hostname your host gives you. They paste it into Multiplayer, Add Server.
  • The version has to match. A 1.21 server needs a 1.21 client. Modded servers need the matching modpack installed on each player's launcher.

If someone cannot connect, it is almost always a version mismatch or a firewall on the server side, not their own setup.
